Where to get an IPTV playlist: legal options for M3U and Xtream

Car Cinema is a player: it comes with no channels and plays the sources you add. Here is where a legal playlist usually comes from, and how to add it.

Your TV or internet provider

Many providers that sell TV with your internet plan let you watch on other devices. Some give you an M3U link or an Xtream login — a server address, a user name and a password — in your account area or when you ask. This is the simplest legal source: the channels you already pay for, now in the car.

An IPTV service you subscribe to

Live-TV services sell channel packages that you can watch in any player. Choose one that holds the rights to the channels it sells: a very cheap service with thousands of premium channels usually doesn’t.

Your own media server

With Jellyfin or Emby on a computer or a NAS at home, your own films and series play in Car Cinema on the iPhone, in the car and on your TV. Add it as a Server source. Read Jellyfin and Emby on CarPlay.

Free live TV, no playlist needed

News channels on YouTube and public broadcasters’ websites play in Car Cinema’s browser. Read free live TV in the car.

What a playlist looks like

  • M3U or M3U8 link: an address that usually ends in .m3u or .m3u8. A provider’s get.php link becomes an Xtream account in Car Cinema by itself.
  • Xtream login: a server address, a user name and a password. You get live channels, films and series.
  • Playlist file or text: a .m3u file in Files, or the playlist’s text that starts with #EXTM3U.
  • QR code: some providers show the link as a QR code — scan it in Car Cinema.

Add it to Car Cinema

  1. Open Car Cinema on the iPhone and add a source.
  2. Choose Link, Xtream, File or Text, and paste or enter what your provider gave you.
  3. Your channels appear in groups, with the TV guide where your playlist provides one.
  4. Add the channels you watch most to favourites: they get their own tab on the car’s screen.

Tips

  • For the car, HLS streams work best. If your provider lets you choose the output format, pick HLS (m3u8).
  • One connection at a time. Some providers allow a single stream per account — stop the TV at home before you watch in the car.
  • Watch it in the car: read how to watch IPTV on CarPlay.
